Abstract:

Andrés Manuel López Obrador currently leads the polls for the Mexican presidential elections this July. He is hardly the demagogue of his critics' imaginations. The more relevant question is: if he becomes Mexico's next president, will he actually bring the changes the country needs? While AMLO navigates a complex and fragmented electoral field with skill, he leads a coalition promising victory but also presenting doubts whether it will uphold a progressive agenda. And more fundamentally, limits in Mexico's political system could prevent any contender or coalition from confronting the greatest problems of inequality and violence.
