Bosw ell’s new collection of Sp enser allusions co vers an unprecedented gamut of materials, fro m a p ortrait of lady anne J Clifford that dis plays Sp enser’s Works as a mark of iden tity to the appearance of Sp enser in scien tific texts, travel writ ing, broadsides , and almanacs. Building o n the collection edited by William Wells, Bos- w ell’s w ork increases kno wledge of the w ays in which sixteen th- and sev enteenth- cen tury readers and writers assessed Sp enser’s reput ation, illuminating the w ays in which Sp enser’s coin ages, characters , places , and ep isodes became part of a cultural vocabulary and appeared in a surprisin g variety of registers, genres, and contexts. r es ponding to co ntemporary in terest in the histor y of books and readin g, Bosw ell incorp orates a grou p of materials largely absent fro m Wells’s collection, includin g library catalogues, auction records , and marg inalia.
