Abstract

A more significant shortcoming in the book's production and editing is the inclusion of unfamiliar terminology. Brasch refers to the "Colonial-Revolutionary Cycle" and the "Civil Rights Cycle" of American Black English, terms that he defined in his 1981 book Black English and the Mass Media. Here, the definitions are relegated to the footnotes and the result is language that is more distracting than helpful. The same might be said of Appendix 5, "A Brief Overview of the Basic Theories of American Black English," which introduces the controversial subject of the origins of Black English even though Brasch has successfully made his point about the comparative accuracy of Harris's dialect many times in the main body of the book. Nonetheless, Brasch's more-is-more approach has resulted in a rich resource for which students of Joel Chandler Harris will be grateful. And thanks to this revitalizing effort, perhaps there will be more such students in decades to come. ........................................................................................................................
