About the Contributors Edison Jennings has published in a variety of journals, most recently in Southern Poetry Review and Nantahala Review, and new poems will be appearing in The Kenyon Review and Clinch Mountain Review. He lives with his family in Abingdon, Virginia, and teaches at Virginia Intermont College. Alex Macaulay graduated from The Citadel in 1994. Since then, he has earned a Master's degree from the University of Tennessee and received his doctorate from the University of Georgia. He is currently visiting assistant professor of history at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee. John Shelton Reed is founding editor of Southern Cultures and William Rand Kenan Jr. Professor Emeritus of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This fall he is Watson-Brown Visiting Professor at the University of South Carolina's Institute for Southern Studies. His most recent book is Minding the South, published by the University of Missouri Press. Joseph Shay studied photography at Middle Tennessee State University. He currently lives in Durham, North Carolina, where he is pursuing various documentary photographic projects. Mart A. Stewart is a professor of history at Western Washington University, who spent fifteen months in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in 2000­2001 and has returned four times since then to organize and teach several American Studies seminars and workshops. William F. Winter served as Governor of Mississippi from 1980 to 1984. He has been a long-time advocate for public education, racial reconciliation, and historic preservation.
