Abstract

symploke Jesus' mission to overturn the Satanic/adversarial image of God, he includes in a single paragraph references to work of Lacan, Saint Paul, Freud, Graham Greene, and William Golding. As is suggested by these rapid-fire references and by the relatively short length of the book, this is not the place to come for in-depth engagement with these thinkers, but that is not Eagleton's purpose. Instead, he challenges readers to rethink the spaces between faith and reason and invites us to act so that we might witness a "transfigured future" (169). Amy L. Gates, University of Illinois at Chicago Marco Abel. Violent Affect: Literature, Cinema, and Critique after Representation. Lincoln, NE: U of Nebraska P, 2008. 312 pp. Vaughan died yesterday in his last car-crash. During our friendship he had rehearsed his death in many crashes, but this was his only true accident. --J.G. Ballard More than once while reading Marco Abel's Violent Affect, I had the distinct feeling that books like this don't really get published much anymore. Above all else, it's the kind of volume that leads with its theoretical stance-- the pious Deluezian astride a sampling of contemporary literary and cinematic sites: the films Miller's Crossing
