Victor Hugo--Le Temps de la contemplation (review)

Victor Hugo--Le Temps de la contemplation (review) collecting. To collect is more than to see, it is to know how to see, “savoir voir,” as she phrases it, thus emphasizing the point she made earlier in her text that her intention was to study the epistemological aspects of the collection as it relates to the Gon- courts’ special way of seeing and their art of writing (294 ). This essay on the cultural history of the collection combined with a literary monograph about the collection as it relates to the Goncourts’ aesthetics offers, on the one hand, a perceptive analysis of the Goncourts and their collection showing how the art of the past served as a rich resource for the artistic imagination of these writers of realist and naturalist fiction; on the other hand, it presents a persuasive case for the unique significance of the collection as a factor in the conflict over artistic values that confronted French artists and writers in the second half of the nineteenth- century.
