Abstract

Book Reviews / 273 action is performed, or signal intentionality (trickery, irony). Lochert concludes by analyzing a number of ways in which didascalies complement the spoken text to enhance the naturalness of the action and the in-depth portrayal of characters. Like the volume as a whole, the bibliography is comprehensive and well organized, running to nearly fifty pages. It complements a truly exceptional work of scholarship, filled with stimulating arguments and interesting examples. However, given the staggering amount of information, supported by superabundant references and quotations in multiple languages, this is not an easy book to get through. It can be most usefully employed as a reference tool that brings together much valuable and fascinating information about early modern theater history.
