Whilst cohesion is often an issue in edited volumes, this work draws on the natural in- terplay between neighbouring articles. The book’s form, built as it is around a plurality of contributing voices, in many senses echoes the overarching mission of its content as it seeks to underline the plurality of sources in Zola’s novels and those influenced by him. In general the quality of contributions is such that highpoints are difficult to identify since a significant number of the chapters merit such a description. The text persua- sively adds to key scholarly debates on Zola and naturalism in relation to concepts of intertextuality, influence and textual transformation. In short, Zola et le texte naturaliste en Europe et aux Amériques is a vibrant, highly-readable, innovative collection. It com- bines verve with scholarly merit and is entirely worthy of recommendation. Hennessy, Susie.
