One of many fascinating aspects of this book are her references to Paul Antschel (Celan), whom she knew from Czernowitz. While many books have been written in German in recent years on Czernowitz as a mythical place in the imagination of German and Austrian literature, English readers do not have access to these sources. This book opens up an interesting reference point in English to this remarkable German-speaking exclave in interwar Romania, where a large Jewish population of over fifty thousand inhabitants spoke and wrote in German while disconnected from the events in Germany and Austria, thus themselves living in an imagined cultural space. This is the space that shaped Celan's and Rosa Ausländer's writings and therefore should be of great interest to scholars interested in Bukovina writers.
