The volume closes with a selection of obituaries (815-40), followed by a pair of early critical assessments containing biographical and bibliographic information (J. -M. Quérard and Auguste Bussière, 843-905). Del Litto has provided an index of proper names, an index of the journals cited, and an index of references to Stendhal's works. Scholarly notes, however, are surprisingly spare, especially for a book edited by Del Litto. The oft-reprinted "Études sur M. Beyle" (758-804, from the Revue parisienne of September 25, 1840) is not clearly attributed to its famous author, Honoré de Balzac. Similarly, the uninitiated may not recognize reviews of Histoire de la peinture en Italie and De l'Amour, signed "S." and published in English-language journals, as having been attributed to Stendhal in his capacity as "journaliste anglais" (90-105 and 188-204). Despite some inevitable omissions (for which Del Litto excuses himself in advance, x), this is an essential volume for stendhaliens and for libraries serving the needs of those who love nineteenth-century French letters. Prefaces to scholarly and student editions of Stendhal's works routinely allude to the reviews reproduced in Stendhal sous l'oeil de la presse contemporaine. We owe a debt of gratitude to Victor Del Litto for
