Abstract

Kathleen Winter The subterranean cafeteria’s dill pickles sliced longways to 1/8th inch thick were green translucent promises to be born into something else again. Severed with a dull school knife, both ends of a pickle became tongues. Gremlins, alligators, slippery enemies of Superman slurped with such tongues. All through fourth grade, at the end of lunch we three would slip a pickle between our pale-pink plastic retainers and the roofs of our mouths before filing out of that fluorescent cavern into torporous afternoons parked at our desks, fed on fractions and grammar, starved for a fire drill or better, a fire, sucking secretly, for hours, on our deliciously bitter ends.
