Artist Statement: Indigenous Virgin Marjorie “Gigi” Peñailillo (Turronas Crew), Virgen Negra (2010), graffi ti mural, Santa Inés, Viña del Mar, Chile. Artist Statement Indigenous Virgin Marjorie Peñailillo Marjorie Peñailillo (Gigi) is a visual artist, a professional graffi ti writer, and a master printmaker. She holds degrees in education, art, and printmaking from the School of Fine Arts in Viña del Mar and the University of Viña del Mar in Chile. Additionally, Gigi is cofounder of one of the few all- female graf- fi ti crews in Chile, the Turronas Crew. She also participated in the multidis- ciplinary urban culture project called Cultura Urbana Chilena. Gigi has orga- nized and led a series of graffi ti workshops for children and young adults in Chile, in collaboration with the Culture and Arts Council and the country’s Offi ce for the Protection of Children and Youth Rights. She has taken part in diverse graffi ti events in Chile and elsewhere in South America, including the international graffi ti summit Concegraff in Concep- ción, Chile (2006– 12). She also taught a workshop for the Second Youth Fes- tival in Fortaleza, Brazil (2011).
