But if one can put aside discomfort with the constant slippage between the historical and the psychoanalytical arguments, the reader will be rewarded with what must be the boldest and most ambitious recent contribution to the psychoanalysis of the French seventeenth century. A final word, however, does need to be said about the surprisingly slack editorial work on the part of Cornell University Press: especially in the notes, one finds misplaced punctuation, myriad parentheses and quotes that open and never close, erratic bibliographic styles; there are also missing words, some misspelled names and titles, and a number of passages quoted inadvertently more than once in the same chapter.
