Edward MacDowell was the most famous and highly regarded composer in the United States at the turn of the twentieth century until a variety of forces conspired to sweep him under the rug following his death in 1908. His “meteoric rise and subsequent fall” (1) may have contributed to a dearth of scholarship on this former giant of the cultivated tradition in American music, aside from some important research on MacDowell’s flirtation with Indian Ev ism en. a good com - prehensive biography of MacDowell and his music did not exist until recently, with readers having to choose between critic Lawrence Gilman’s hagiographic contemporary biography and historian Alan H. Levy’s volume, which does not adequately engage with the music. That the situation has changed as of late for MacDowell scholarship is largely due to E.
