mA ri ANA WHiTmer Silent Westerns: Hugo r iesenfeld’s Compiled Score for The Covered Wagon (1923) o n m arch 11, 1923, James Cruze’s The Covered Wagon was presented at a prerelease screening at the plaza ballroom in New York City to benefit the maternity Centre Association. The Junior l eague sponsored the event, and program sellers were attired as Native Americans and cowboys. Attendees included such notables as mr. and mrs. John D. r ockefeller Jr. and m rs. pierpont m organ, and according to the New York Times, “the ballroom was filled, and there was frequent applause.” Six days later the film opened to the general public at the Criterion Theater on b road- way, which had an eye- catching electric prairie schooner mounted on the outside (fig. 1). in l os Angeles The Covered Wagon was the second film to be screened at Sid g rauman’s new e gyptian Theater, but it had its longest run at g rauman’s slightly older m illion Dollar Theater, which opened in 1918.
