In working to understand and overcome challenges in our feminist classrooms, we examine literature of new feminisms and feminist teaching in art education. We focus on discourses of second-wave feminism and new feminisms, including postfeminism and third-wave feminism. Considering new feministsâ cultural reality and approaches to girl power, we further identify the role of visual culture and technology in shaping their social and learning preferences in personal narratives, multivocality, inclusivity, and individually situated activism. We offer feminist pedagogical strategies responsive to new feminisms to reduce resistance and tension in feminist teaching: changing traditional instructional approaches, creating purposeful confrontations, addressing gender as one issue among many, and negotiating expectations for feminist classrooms with students.
