(THe ColoNIal muSIC INSTITuTe) Some reflections on the Two Hundredth anniversary of "The Star-Spangled banner" and its forgotten Partner, "The battle of baltimore" A patriotic song is an enchanted key to memory's deepest cells; it touches secret springs, it kindles sacred flames in chambers of the soul unvisited by other agencies. It wakes to life ten thousand slumbering chords and makes them thrill and pulsate--just as if some loving angel's finger touched them--to the God-given sentiment of liberty. --Rev. Elias Nason, MA (1869) In the late summer of 1814, fifty-five years before these flowery words were published, americans were coming to grips with the discomforting fact that their national capital had just been taken and partially destroyed by David , an early americanist, performs and lectures at museums, historical societies, and universities. He holds a bS from Dickinson College; his ma and PhD (both musicology) are from George Washington and Catholic universities. He teaches american music history at the Peabody Conservatory and is an author for the Johns Hopkins university Press. David consulted on the PbS series Liberty!
