Abstract

BUDDHIST-CHRISTIAN STUDIES the religions and the interpretation of Jesus Christ in other faiths, who is the ultimate source of forgiveness for Christians. Fitzgerald undertakes this foray into the interpretation of two Christian themes in other faith traditions with the inspiration of Matthew 16:13 as a backdrop. Christians are to attend carefully to what Jesus has done in word and deed, to respond as Peter did, and to dialogue with those varying images of his person and teachings found in other faith traditions. Although Jesus as a rabbi, bodhisattva, or avatar is not the proper Christian confession, they nevertheless bear sufficient fruit for Fitzgerald to discern "the unique person of Jesus Christ . . . at the origin of these different reflections" (Fitzgerald, 220). The final chapter fittingly offers short biographical sketches of Catholic "prophets of dialogue," modeling for the reader lives lived in relationship with other faiths. Fitzgerald is quick to point out that other traditions too have their "prophets of dialogue" (Fitzgerald, 229), who together with the Church proceed in a spirit of honor and respect for truth with a sincere commitment that these relationships will benefit the well-being of all the world.
