392 B oo k Rev ie ws Kohn himself died before seeing his book through to publication. Interestingly, he begins with a note on secrecy in the tradition and quotes the fourteenth Dalai LamaÕs warning about Òthose who have been unable to com- plete their lifespan and others whose progress was delayed through writing a book on mantraÓ (p. xxix). Nevertheless, KohnÕs exhaustive labor will help to preserve cultural knowledge of the Mani Rimdu festival for future genera- tions. London: Routledge, 2000. 542 pp. $180 Theatrical Costume, Masks, Make -up and Wigs provides a source for both the practicing designer and the academic researcher. It is the Þrst of the Motley Bibliographies to be devoted to a speciÞc theatrical art. Covering theatrical history from ancient times through July 1996, this bibliography and iconog- raphy of performance costume is international in scope. Much of it includes valuable materials relevant to Asian theatre. Sources include traditional vol- umes as well as exhibition catalogs, theses, manuals, and performersÕ mem- oirs. Sections cover costume for theatre, opera, ballet, masquerade, and car- nival. There are, however, no listings under history of fashion or dress. Fashion history is covered only under sources devoted to theatrical costume. Section A, ÒDesigners,Ó lists theatre artists who designed or built cos- tumes between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries. When an artist is known for other work, only the costume-related publications are included. Section B, ÒPerforming Arts,Ó is subdivided into sections designated as international or by country or region. Other sections cover the special areas of ÒBallet and Dance in the Western World,Ó ÒOpera, Operetta, and Music Theater in the Western World,Ó ÒCommedia dellÕarte,Ó and ÒMasquerade, Carnival, and Fancy Dress.Ó Section G, ÒInstruction,Ó covers how-to books and manuals. Sec- tion H, ÒReferences,Ó includes dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, and other bibliographies. Catalogs of museums and libraries with costume hold- ings and a selection of retail sources are referenced. Theatrical Costume, Masks, Make - up and Wigs stands as an excellent bib- liographic source for researching stage costume, costume construction tech- niques, and the work of speciÞc costume designers.
