Progressive Traditions: An Illustrated Study of Plot Repetition In Traditional Japanese Theatre... Book Reviews 157 popular Jakarta-based theatre company Teater Koma, legitimizes the legacy of Komedie Stamboel by incorporating colonial-style theatrical conventions into his productions and by staging plays about popular theatre in the early twen- tieth century. While this chapter adds some interesting additional views on stambul ’s legacy, it is not written with the same amount of detail as the previous chapters and seems to be an afterthought. This rich history, this thick description, of the Komedie Stamboel is rounded out with an appendix of plays and tableaux, extensive notes, a glos- sary of Indonesian terms and words used in the book, and a selected bibliog- raphy of newspapers and books. All in all, The Komedie Stamboel represents an impressive achievement of careful and exhaustive research that will be of value to Indonesian and theatre scholars, as well as those interested in colonial his- tory and popular culture.
