LI NAN I have anger that looks decent as blac k satin. I have patience that drips like water throug h stones. I have the hesitancy of a kind per son when he or she occasionally lies. I have sadness and its twin daugh ters: one is called sorrowful and the other soh ft earted. I have the appearance of the p oor, gestures of the r ich. I have the quietness of a woman knitting a sw eater, and wildness as when she stays in a farmhouse over night. I pass under a suspension bridg e where a clown is staging a perform ance. Look, death has seized me but I go my usual wa y, tasting a new wine while laug hing. I have the temperament of a fool who’s al so lazy. I live in the field under an old eucalyptus t ree. I have a singing voice deep and windin g— no one dares take it, or anyt hing from me. Translation by Ming Di and Frank Stewart
