Abstract:

Himanshu Joshi has been in the field of visual arts, media, theatre and music for more than three decades. He grew up in Delhi, but his ancestral home is in the mountainous Kumaon region, on the eastern side of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. He completed his master's degree in communications, at the Mass Communications Research Center Jamia in Delhi in 1986, and has produced numerous current-affairs programs, documentaries, and corporate films. But his professional career has always centered on music. Since 2009, he has performed internationally as a member of the fusion rock band Indian Ocean. Joshi first studied North Indian classical music under the late Ustad Ishtiyaq Husain Khan of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharÄnÄ (music lineage or school), and later under Shri Madhup Mudgal at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi. He was initiated into the field of folk music by his uncle, the late Shri Mohan Upreti (1928â1997), a nationally recognized director and artist in Kumaoni music and theatre. Joshi has taken part in many folk operas based on the Ramayan and other stories, in the style of the Kumaon and Garhwal hills in Uttarakhand, in various national and international forums, with the Parvatiya Kala Kendra (PKK) in Delhi, founded by his uncle. Later, he spent a decade documenting the Kumaoni Ramlila, which he calls "OpeRama." He has collected over 450 musical compositions from Almora, Pithoragarh, and Nainital in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.
