He was initiated into the field of folk music by his uncle, the late Shri Mohan Upreti (1928–1997), a nationally recognized director and artist in Kumaoni music and theatre. Joshi has taken part in many folk operas based on the Ramayan and other stories, in the style of the Kumaon and Garhwal hills in Uttarakhand, in various national and international forums, with the Parvatiya Kala Kendra (PKK) in Delhi, founded by his uncle. Later, he spent a decade documenting the Kumaoni Ramlila, which he calls "OpeRama."
