Zen. He almost never engages directly with Buddhism as a religious body of belief and practice in the book, though he sometimes engages with Buddhist practitioners as Buddhists. He appreciates their shared humanity and their wisdom and compassion. Curiously, given the title and his Zen interlocutor, his few direct engagements with Buddhism are not about Zen. The only Buddhism with any real presence in Metzgerâs own chapters is Pure Land Buddhism, whether in occasional discussions of Jodo Shinshu belief, the haiku poet Issa, or the Amida-based Buddhism of ZenkÅji in Nagano. This book could be included on syllabi for courses about interfaith dialogue, but a more likely usage is for stimulating interfaith group discussion. Christian and Buddhist readers could describe their reactions to the authorsâ points and explore their own perspectives together. The palpable and admirable friendship of the two authors is likely to give more conservative readers productive pause, nudging them to rethink the possibilities for relationship that exist between Christians and Buddhists.
