NEWS AND VIEWS John Berthrong Boston University The International Buddhist-Christian Theological Encounter Group has been meeting regularly every other year since the early 1980s, with a gratifying history of continuity, change, and informed conversation. As far as anyone knows, this is now the longest continuous interreligious theological encounter in the world. The topic for this session was the "Economic Aspects of Social and Environmental Violence." The continuity of the group derives from the fact that a number of the original participants from the first meeting in 1983 are still attending the sessions, including John Berthrong, John Cobb, Rosemary Radford Ruether, Gordon Kaufman, and Schubert Ogden for the Christians and David Chappell, Rita Gross, Judith SimmerBrown, Ryusei Takeda, and Sulak Sivaraksa for the Buddhists. New ideas come with more recent additions to the group; namely, José Cabezón, Stephanie Kaza, Sung-bae Park, Heng-ching Shih, Michio Shinozaki, Kenneth Tanaka, and Yifa for the Buddhists and Karen Baker-Fletcher, John Borelli, Michael Fuss, Mary Gerhart, Carol Johnson, Valerie Karras, Donald Mitchell, Terry Muck, and Marjorie Suchocki for the Christians.
