492 BOOK REVIEWS Moreover, Chang’s book is significant in that it opens up several new areas of inquiry for future research, especially with regard to the theory of interculturation. There are three layers to the productiveness of this concept. First, interculturation empowers scholars to look beyond performances that are conventionally bound by their geogra- phical boundaries, such as western performance that embeds Chinese elements. Second, this method of examining theatre through interculturation can also be replicated in other countries or areas, such as Chinese elements in Latino theatre. Third, interculturation is as much about the completed performance as it is about the process of making a performance and the active agents involved in such a process. Chang stated that “the process [of interculturation] is its openness to new inputs to influence and shape this representation” so much so that “[the Chinese references] are not simply time-trapped and fixed but have evolved” (p. 183). Interculturation is about the process of making a performance, a constantly self-challenging mechanism that rethinks the kind of culture it refers to.
