Abstract

110 JOURNAL OF WORLD HISTORY, MARCH 2018 Just as an example, pages 173–176 discuss piracy and privateering in the Atlantic World, exploring motives for sailors to participate, and the tensions within Europe that stimulated conflict in this sphere. This analysis is almost certainly based on more than the two sources cited in the footnotes. Of course, this may be as much the result of editing and the practice of the publishers, but it limits the value of the work. Overall, War and Conflict in the Early Modern World is an important work. It brings together many different strands of historical thought and covers an impressive array of current research. It may not have consistently presented as clearer argument as it could have, yet it demonstrates that there were many and multivalent reasons why war and conflict changed in this period. Ambitious scholarship can stimulate the reframing of a subject, and I hope that Brian Sandberg’s book is recognised for opening up issues for further debate.
