By translating and publishing this rare storyteller’s script in full, Børdahl and Ge joined the recent effort to present to the English world understudied works in Chinese popular literature. While past anthologies of folk literature (often selected or abridged) give an edited sampling of an extremely rich diverse repertoire, the full translation as done exemplarily by the two scholars here signals ever more urgent need to preserve quickly disappearing traditions. Reading this palimpsest of texts multiplied over time and across cultures, one could not help desiring immediate access to its oral and performative life. A digital supplement of Dai Buzhang’s performance of the Western Han would be a most welcomed companion for this translation.
