Since I get a "New Year's Letter" from you every year this time I will write one Your "New Year's Letter" was a mimeographed section of W.H. Auden's long poem It's always a pleasure Speaking of Auden I love the poem called "September 1, 1939" the epilogue goes like this "Defenseless under the night Our world in stupor lies; Yet, dotted everywhere, Ironic points of light Flash out wherever the Just Exchange their messages: May I, composed like them Of Eros and of dust, Beleaguered by the same Negation and despair, Show an affirming flame."
