Abstract:

In this self-interview, first performed in French in 1986, Sylvère Lotringer reflects on his own role as interviewer, editor, and publisher of books of interviews via the imprint Semiotext(e). Interviews are tools for mediating and doing (French) theory in New York in the 1970s and 1980s, but they are also part of his artistic practice and provide him a specific position of invisibility from which he can both observe and intervene. This interview includes the original French alongside an English translation, produced by Catherine Combes. Anneleen Masschelein edited this interview and authored its introduction.
