Mariani... 370 China Review International: Vol. 18, No. 3, 2011 quantifies the various elements of characters and the printed page strikingly demonstrates that Sinology is a big tent, with room for all kinds of scholarly minds. Is it not wonderful that with a shared mentor, a shared body of basic knowledge, and shared standards of evidence and writing, these authors produced essays so different? Not only is the book an intellectual treat and a reaffirmation of the importance of teachers and friends in our studying, but also, as a physical object, the book looks good and feels good. The paper is smooth and sufficiently opaque. The type is clear and, apart from the size of the pictures, the pages are well designed. Looking back, I see that I have used up my lifetime quota of “fascinating”s. It was worth it. Read the book.
