Abstract

Reviews 87 Having deflated many myths, DeFrancis could have been more helpful to the general reader by referring the reader to other illuminating supplementary works. Travel accounts generally omit bibliographies, but DeFrancis' book is, in my view, more than a standard adventure story of a perilous journey through generally unknown terrain. A list of other sources on Inner Asia would have greatly benefited the general reader. Yet DeFrancis has been considerate in other ways to his readers. He provides detailed and clear maps of the regions through which he traveled, and he has persuaded Myra Taketa, a secretary in his department at the University of Hawai'i, to contribute some charming line drawings that illustrate his narrative.
