China's Chaplin: Comic Stories and Farces by Xu Zhuodai (review) Reviews 69 weathered, displaced individual whose voice rises above the fractured, turbulent world he lives in, although not without soulful sentiments that carry his voice far and beyond, resonating across time. While it would be difficult to set the lyrics to the original tunes, we could remind ourselves that, just like the literary amplification (yinkuo) or musical adjustment of Wang Wei’s “Sending Off Mr. Yuan to Anxi” (analyzed in the book), “Drift Away” has had many different versions, and what remains unchanged is nostalgia not only for freedom or individual space of the lyric “proper” (bense 本色), but also for those who sing the song, “from a reflective distance and with a smile” (p. 222). Lanlan Kuang Lanlan Kuang is an associate professor at the University of Central Florida’s Department of Philosophy specializing in aesthetics, heritage studies, and the Dunhuang expressive arts.
