Books Received FRITZ BENNEWITZ IN INDIA: INTERCULTURAL THEATRE WITH BRECHT AND SHAKESPEARE. By Joerg Esleben, with Rolf Rhomer and David G. John. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2016. This is a useful intervention in the discussion of intercultural theatre from an East German perspective that focuses on director Fritz Bennewitz, who, from the 1970s to the 1990s, directed multiple productions of Western classics in South Asia. His productions presented Brecht, Shakespeare, Goethe, and Chekhov in New Delhi, Bhopal, Bangalore, Heggodu, Mysore, Lucknow, and Mumbai in India and Daka in Bagladesh. The introduction gives an overview of the career of this prolific East German director who collaborated frequently with companies in India and worked with student actors and faculty at the National School of Drama on training as well as working in the Philippines, discussing his growing understanding of the collaborative intercultural adaptation process. The first section of the book is well-edited excerpts from Bennewitz’s letters and other writings about his directorial process in India. The letters give an open and generous-hearted look at Bennewitz’s growing understanding of working with and training Indian actors in modern productions of Western classics as he worked to modify the texts to meet the needs http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Asian Theatre Journal University of Hawai'I Press
