About the Korean Centennial Foundation ABOUT THE KOREAN CENTENNIAL FOUNDATION The Centennial Committee of Korean Immigration to the United States is building upon the success of the 2003 celebration to establish the Korean Centennial Foundation. The Foundation will initiate projects to further encourage cross-cultural understanding and harmony among Koreans and non-Koreans, and to nurture young leaders committed to the development of both the Korean American community and American society as a whole. The first Korean immigrants understood the power of combining many small contributions to achieve a greater goal, and the Korean Centennial Foundation is requesting donations, no matter how small, to foster its mis- sion. Donations or requests for information may be sent to the Korean Centennial Foundation, Center for Korean Studies, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, 1881 East-West Road, Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96822. ABOUT MANOA Century of the Tiger is a production of Manoa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing, a non- profit, semiannual publication of the University of Hawai‘i Press since 1989. Manoa’s mission is to foster understanding among peoples and cultures of Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas; to encourage tolerance and respect by creating transnational communities and conversations; and to make Americans aware that our shared heritage includes significant contributions from peo- ples whose origins are in Asia or the Pacific. To do this, Manoa presents outstanding contemporary writing—often in translations commis- sioned by the journal—including fiction, essays, poetry, interviews, and plays. Works in Manoa have been cited for excellence and reprinted in such prize anthologies as Best American Short Stories, Best American Poetry, Best American Essays, Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards, and the Pushcart Prize. Manoa has also received national awards for its design excellence. In addition to publishing, Manoa works in partnership with other organizations to sponsor read- ings, conferences, exhibitions, and performances. Manoa is also engaged in projects to create curricular materials for secondary schools in order to promote teaching and learning about Asia and the Pacific. For example, Manoa recently joined with educators in Hawai‘i and Viet Nam to facilitate face-to-face contact among students and teachers in order to exchange perspectives. Future projects include developing programming for public radio appropriate for student audi- ences as well as the general public.
