Roadside Religion: In Search of the Sacred, the Strange, and the Substance of Faith

Roadside Religion: In Search of the Sacred, the Strange, and the Substance of Faith Reviews Roadside Religion: In Search of the Sacred, the Strange, and the Substance of Faith. By Timothy K. Beal. Beacon Press, 2005. 216 pages. $14.00 paper. When Timothy Beal sets out on an adventure to explore eleven of America’s roadside religious attractions with his family, he is surprised and intrigued by what he finds. After observing and reflecting on sites such as God’s Ark of Safety, Holy Land USA, Ave Maria Grotto, Cross Garden, and the Holy Land Experience, Beal draws insightful conclusions about the landscape of American religion, specifically Evangelical Protestant Christianity, as revealed by some of its most outspoken followers. Each chapter of the book outlines a different location visited by Beal, and includes detailed (at times lengthy) descriptions of aesthetics, as well as background information about the creator of each attraction. Beal efficiently orients each site within the American religious landscape as he provides background information into the doctrine represented as well as other ideas that motivated the creation of the site. 123 Nova Religio Several chapters of the book also compare sites to one another and offer Beal’s own reaction, as well as those of his family members, to the attractions.
