However, a more thorough inspection embryos bearing transplants mouse sarcomas 37 and 180 revealed that the effect was not confined to sensory ganglia and in fact involved the sympathetic ganglia even more so (185). It was Levi-Montalcini and Hamburger (185) who realized that not only ganglia adjacent to the tumor, but also those remote from it, were affected. They suggested that the sarcoma tissue released a diffusible factor into the circulation that was reponsible for the observed effects.
