Neurons Nucleus in Cat SHJKONS iI1 th-Sal ndeus hterd genicula te hotly () undergo retrograde clegeneration following clestruction ir axonal projection cortex, i.e., striate cortex or area 17. Practically all nerve cells sllow retrogracle <legenera tion anal eventually disappear in rat, rabl,i t, monkey, man (1â7, 25-27, 32). In cat, however, many neurons persist inside tlegeneratc<l zone long after cortical lesion. Cliow ant1 Dewson (7) found that about .w , (, normal neurons remainecl in atrophietl for 3 (lays after aMating areas 17 18. This percentage <Iroppetl to about 3t, at end 1 week ant1 to about 25 in 6 weeks. reafter, number cells was maintainecl more or less at this level for as long as 50 postoperative weeks. three populations neurons in cat (22, 29), large-sized (cell hly diam ca. 40 p) medium-sized ones (ca. 25 p) disappearecl almost completely. Only smallest neurons (ca. 10 p) were left in deyeneratetl nucleus. Wietller se neurons iepresent cells with short axons which end within nucleus is not known (22) nor wher y retain functional properties normal lateral genicula te cells. In present investigation we liave recorded extracellularly tile single-unit clischarges rcsitlual neurons in clegenerated have examineti ir response patterns
