Physiol. 24(4) : 503-509. 1968.Heat loss from the , Pseudemys scripta elegans, was measured by direct calorimetry durg experimental dives lastg 4 hr at 24 C and was correlated with the depletion rate of blood and lung oxygen. On the basis of this correlation the divg period was subdivided to three phases: I, heat loss at the predive rate persisted 20-25 m while oxygen concentrations were rapidly fallg; II, the rate of heat loss rapidly decled to 40% of the itial rate from 25-45 m while available oxygen reserves were exhausted; III, for the remader of the dive the rate of heat loss gradually decled to 15 % of the predive rate while oxygen reserves remaed low and constant. Central body temperature and muscle electrical activity decreased parallel fashion to heat loss when measured simultaneously durg divg.
