Physiol. 242 (Regulatory tegrative Comp. Physiol. 11): R121-R128, 1982.-The constrats placed on diffusive gas by the hell and the adaptive features of embryonic respiration and mabolism large Laysan and black-footed (300 g) durg prolonged cubation (65 days) were examed ly cubated on Sand Island, Midway, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. A low hell gas conductance and slow growth rate were associated with a relatively low oxygen consumption (MO*) throughout cubation. Just prior to ternal pippg (IP) of the ner shell membrane and penration of the air space, the hloz (pre-IP &IO,) was approximately 1,250 ml 02 (STPD) *day-â for both species, resultg air cell 02 and CO* tensions of 106 and 40 Torr, respectively. Durg the 4- to &day pippg-to-hatchg terval, O2 uptake creases rapidly as pulmonary respiration is itiated, Hatchlg 02 consumption averaged 3,706 mI 02 (STPD) day-â or about three times the pre-IP Mea. Data support the hypothesis that embryonic mabolism among ProcelIariiformes is related to the extent to which the cubation period deviates from
