THEREIS BOTHCLINICAL( 11,13) experimental (6, 16) evidence indicating that compensatory growth occurs following removal of portions of tissue. Cellular hyperp lasia without hypertrophy has been demonstrated in the remaining following pneumonectomy both in young adult animals (6,s). Compensatory growth has also been described following collapse (22, 24), but the character of this growth response its variability with age are not known. The present experiments were, therefore, designed to determine if compensatory cellular hyperplasia or hypertrophy occurs in the presence of collapsed tissue to compare this response in young adult rats. It was also of interest to ascertain whether the growth response following collapse differs from that following removal of tissue. These studies are of particular clinical relevance in the ,pediatric age group because of the frequency with which collapse occurs as a complication of pulmonary infections, allergic diseases, aspiration of foreign bodies. METHODS Seventy-three male Long-Evans rats (Blue Spruce Farms, Altamont, N. Y.) were romly divided into six groups, as outlined in Table 1. Experimental collapse procedure (groups 1A , 2A, 3A). Under halothane anesthesia, a tracheostomy cannula was inserted into the left main stem bronchus, 0.1 ml of a liquid plastic (Permlastic, Kerr, Romulus, Mich.) was injected
