HRONIC FOCAL EPILEPSY may be readily induced in monkeys by the application of alumina cream (aluminum hydroxide cream) to a principal cerebral sensori-motor cortical area by discs or local injections (I, 2). Such epileptic animals may be thrown into motor convulsions by vigorous prodding or stress, the susceptibility to such seizures usually being proportional to the incidence or frequency of âspontaneousâ seizures(I). The present study was undertaken to determine the comparative effecas a provocative convulsant drug tiveness of pentamethylenetetrazole (Metrazol) when administered by the rapid intravenous, METHOD or intramuscular routes. Seventeenmonkeys (weighing 3-4 kg) were made epileptic by the alumina cream technic. Seizureswhich occurred spontaneously and in response to prodding or stress for I min. were recorded and used in estimating the degree of clinical epilepsy during the test period, graded from zero to four plus. The threshold doses of intravenous and intramuscular IO% Metrazol required to precipitate motor epilepsy in the epi- leptic group, and the convulsive dosein a group of sevenunoperated control monkeys of approximately the same weight was determined. Injections were made into leg areas of the animals while in their cages, in s-15 sec. with as little physical excitation as possible. For this a
