Bard and anim als which survived decerebion Macht described the of seven mesencephalic and pontine cats which survived for 26-154 days. Recently Bard and Woods (17-19, and unpublished data) have studied 62 similar cats during extended periods of survival (28-359 days) and have confirmed all of the findings of Bard and Macht. These latest studies have had as their primary objective an investigation of the endocrine status of animals with all or parts of their forebrain removed. Although considerable information has been gained regarding some endocrine functions (4, 18, 19), efforts to study ovarian function were partially thwarted by the fact that the cat is not a spontaneous ovulator and by the relatively prolonged estrous cycl .e of this species.
