he dispute over the canon which has Trumbled on in the United States over the last decade or so, with its fierce denun- ciations of 'political correctness' and its apocalyptic warnings of the decline of 'Western civilization', is by now widely graham macphee familiar. Over recent years academic responses to this often acrimonious debate have identified the assumptions and contra- dictions which underpin appeals to the uni- VALUE , TRADITIO N versality of the canon, and have uncovered the political impulse which underlies accusa- AN D THE PLACE tions of 'political correctness'.1 While inter- est in the debate has subsequently waned, OF THE PRESENT this dispute may yet provide an important opportunity to consider the interrelation of the disputed canon in the cultural and the political through its opening onto questions of judgement and the united states value.
