She is perhaps best known for her ground-breaking study The Crusades: Islamic Perspectives, published back in 1999, which became – and remains – a major point of refer- ence for any scholar interested in this field. In a career spanning many decades, she has pub- lished extensively on a range of subjects connected to this region and it is a measure of the sheer scale of her research that it requires three large volumes to collate her
