In addition to ˙ ˙ the articles, the volume contains a new introduction, updated notes, and a compre- hensive index, all of which reflect years of meticulous scholarship on the history of the Islamic West in the sixth/twelfth and seventh/thirteenth centuries. In the introduction, Fierro details her initial foray into Almohad history, which began when the Spanish scholar María Jesús Viguera invited her to contribute a section to the multi-volume work Historia de España Menéndez Pidal. Titled “La reli- gión”, her section was included in the volume pertaining to the Almoravids and Almohads that was published in 1997. Writing and researching the section led Fierro to begin studying various aspects of the Almohad experience. Her work until that point had mostly focused on early Islamic history, particularly the Umayyads in al-Andalus.
