Reviewed by Viggo Hj0rnager Pedersen, University of Copenhagen I n the introduction to his dissertation Lars Wollin specifies two objectives for his book : 1. T o demonstrate a metho d of general validity for the analysis and descriptio n of translation, regarded as a language act, a process. 2 . To say something of importance, as the result of applying this method , about the translating activity that took place at the monaster y of Vadstena in Sweden during the late Middle Ages (roughl y the 15th century). This activity mainly involved the translatio n of Christian edifying literature from Latin into Old Swedish , an undertaking of the utmost significance for the consolidatio n and later development of written Swedish. Th e dissertation forms the first par t of a larger project, the second par t of which is t o offer a systematic contrastive study of Latin and Old Swedish syntax. Th e book is divided into six chapters. In the first of these Wollin states his theoretica l position vis a vis the phenomenon of
