Paul Diderichsen: Helhed og Struktur. Udvalgte Sprogvidenskabelige Afhandlinger
Abstract
Abstract This handsome collection of essays by the late Paul Diderichsen (1905–1964) presents some of his principal contributions to the theory of grammar and the history of linguistics. Capably edited, it includes besides notes, pp. 398–411, long English summaries for any of the nineteen selected papers not originally published in English, French or German. Besides an introduction to Diderichsen–s work, the collection reflects the development of linguistics from 1935–1964 as seen by a very acute observer who was not a central member of any group with a specific methodological approach. Though nearest to Hjelmslev, he was critical of all approaches. Students accordingly may profit greatly from the essays. For in a discipline which seems more afflicted than most by enthusiasms, by the influence of powerful personalities, by allegiance to schools rather than considered examination of theory with the assistance of previous scholarship and actual data, students can sort out the parochial dogmatism which partial schooling often produces if they take advantage of the calm critique of an outstanding thinker who is not an adherent of any school.
