Message from the managing editor CONTEMPORARY JAPAN 2019, VOL. 31, NO. 2, 117 https://doi.org/10.1080/18692729.2019.1659628 EDITORIAL Dear readers, This issue marks another important development for Contemporary Japan. In addition to 2019 being our first full year as a Scopus-indexed journal, our second issue of the year introduces a new section featuring invited papers written by internationally renowned scholars who present a critical overview of their field of expertise. This time we have the pleasure of benefiting from Ulrich Teichler’s insights on the development and current state of the Japanese academic world from the outsider perspective of a German education scholar. Teichler is a leading expert on global higher education, and his observations are the culmination of over 50 years of engagement with Japanese higher education. He offers a critical and holistic perspective on the academic profession in Japan through longitudinal analysis and international comparison.
