Letters of a Sufi Scholar: The Correspondence of ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Nābulusī (1641–1731)

Letters of a Sufi Scholar: The Correspondence of ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Nābulusī (1641–1731) Al-Masaq, Vol. 24, No. 3, December 2012 Book Reviews Letters of a Sufi Scholar: The Correspondence of 6Abd al-Ghani al-Na¯bulusi (1641–1731) SAMER AKKACH, 2010 [Islamic History and Civilization 74] Leiden: Brill xxiv þ 134 pp. (English) þ 378 pp. (Arabic) E149.00/US$ 232.00 (hardback) ISBN 9789004171022 After his monograph, 6Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulusi: Islam and the Enlightenment (Oxford: Oneworld, 2007), this is Samer Akkach’s second significant contribution to the study of 6Abd al-Ghani al-Na ¯ bulusi and his legacy. The current work consists of an introduction to 6Abd al-Ghani’s collection of letters, including a careful analysis of its contents and the very first edition of the text in its original Arabic. The present collection comprises 72 letters which 6Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulusi wrote and received over a period of 29 years, from 1085/1675 until 1114/1703. The letters included in this collection were selected, compiled and titled by the author himself as Wasa8il al-tahqiq wa-rasa8il al-tawf iq (The Means of Truth- ¯ ¯ Seeking and the Letters of Providential Guidance). Akkach structures his introduction to 6Abd al-Ghani’s correspondence within three major sections. In the first section, three main topics are covered. First, background information on 6Abd al-Ghani’s life and work is provided.
