Family Life on the Dole
Abstract
This paper explores the research findings of a study, completed in 1990, which looked into the effects of unemployment on rural New Zealand families. A paradigm of grounded theory development was used to illuminate the experiences of 10 couples who had been affected by unemployment. The study illustrates the negative effects of unemployment upon individuals and families. Generally, the findings are consistent with previous studies which point to the detrimental effect of unemployment on individual and family functioning.
